Croatan High School students woke up to a rare and exciting sight as the Blizzard of 2026 covered Carteret County in snow and ice, creating conditions few students in eastern North Carolina have ever experienced. With roads unsafe for travel, Croatan High was closed, giving Cougars an unexpected snow day to enjoy the historic storm.
Snow fell steadily across the county, turning neighborhoods, docks, and marshes into winter scenes more typical of the mountains than the coast. For many Croatan students, it was their first real snowfall—and they made the most of it.
Cougars Take Over Snow Day
Social media quickly filled with posts from Croatan students sharing how they spent their day:
❄️ Snowball fights and snow forts popped up in backyards across Carteret County
🛷 Students got creative with sledding, using anything from sleds to boogie boards
📸 Many captured photos of snow-covered beaches, boats, and yards
☕ Others enjoyed a slower pace, posting cozy moments with hot chocolate, movies, and pets
From group chats lighting up with snow photos to friendly debates over the best sledding spot, the storm gave students a shared experience they’ll be talking about long after the snow melts.
A Snow Day Cougars Won’t Forget
For a school located just minutes from the coast, the Blizzard of 2026 was more than a weather event—it was a moment of connection. Croatan students turned a rare day off into one filled with laughter, creativity, and memories that will last well beyond graduation.
Stay safe, Cougars—and thanks for sharing your snow day moments with the Croatan community! 🐾❄️
