October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time dedicated to promoting safe and responsible technology use. At Croatan High School, we are committed to helping both staff and students develop the knowledge and habits needed to stay safe in today’s digital world.
To strengthen our cybersecurity culture, staff members receive professional training through the KnowBe4 platform, provided by the Carteret County Public Schools Department of Digital Teaching and Learning. This training helps educators recognize phishing attempts, protect sensitive data, and model best practices for online safety. Staff resources and training materials are available through the district’s KnowBe4 Training page.
Our students at Croatan High School also participate in digital citizenship instruction through Common Sense Education. This year's interactive learning experience for our 9th-12th grade students, “Risk Check for New Tech” will help students think critically about the technology they use, evaluate online risks, and make informed choices about sharing personal information.
Croatan High School and all Carteret County Public Schools comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), a federal law that requires schools to adopt and implement an Internet safety policy. This policy ensures that students are protected from inappropriate online content and that their digital activities support learning in a safe and secure environment. More information about CIPA compliance can be found on the district’s CIPA Compliance page.
Our Cougar community and families also play an important role in supporting cybersecurity awareness. Families can get involved by talking with their students about online safety, setting clear expectations for responsible technology use, and staying informed about current digital trends and risks. Simple steps—like creating strong passwords, being cautious with personal information, and thinking before clicking—can help keep everyone safer online. By working together, we can strengthen digital security at home, at school, and throughout our community.
💻 Cyber Safety Tips for Families
Talk regularly with your child about what they do online and who they interact with.
Use strong, unique passwords for each account and update them often.
Think before you click — avoid suspicious links and unexpected attachments.
Check privacy settings on social media and gaming platforms.
Model safe habits by practicing the same digital behaviors you want your child to follow.
Together, we can help our Cougars stay smart, safe, and secure online—this month and every month.
