As part of our commitment to student safety, more than half of the student population at Croatan High School have stepped forward to formally commit to responsible driving behind the wheel. In a powerful show of collective responsibility, students have signed the following Safe Driver Pledge:

I pledge to be a safe and responsible driver every time I get behind the wheel. I promise to:
Always wear my seatbelt , stay focused, never drive under the influence, follow speed limits, avoid distractions, respect others, speak up.

Our Parent Advisory Council (PAC) invited students to stop by the cafeteria table and sign the pledge to be a safe and responsible driver. This campaign was held in memory of Lawson Blevins, a West Craven High School senior who tragically lost his life in December 2024 while not wearing a seatbelt. His mom’s mission — #NeverGiveUpUntilTheyBuckleUp — continues to raise awareness at area schools in his honor.

A Community Effort

This initiative is not just students alone — it has been supported by many partners in our community:

  • Special thanks to Cedar Point Collision for providing a wrecked vehicle for educational demonstration, pickups, and logistics help during our awareness events.

  • Shout out to Bryan Hunsinger for designing and donating the “Teen Driver” banner.

  • And to Mr. Davis, whose constant support has made the program possible and helped embed it into our school culture.

Why This Matters

According to national data on teen driver safety, many teen crashes are preventable when awareness, restraint, and responsibility are prioritized. Teens are more vulnerable behind the wheel due to inexperience and higher chances of exposure to distractions or risky behaviors. (trafficsafetymarketing.gov)
By signing the pledge, our students are committing not only to protect themselves, but also to protect their peers, passengers, and the community.

Growing a Culture of Safety

We are proud to see so many students choosing to commit to safe driving habits. Our hope is that this becomes the norm among all student drivers at Croatan — where responsible driving is part of our Cougar identity.
